The name "double" may give the impression that this mattress size is adequate for two persons. However, this is not the case for the majority of couples.

A double is just 54 inches broad, which is only 15 inches wider than a twin. When compared to the breadth of a queen (60 inches) or king (76 inches), it's easy to see why a double may feel too small for two sleepers.

So, who needs a double bed? We often recommend doubles for single persons who want more space than a twin. The double can seem rather roomy for a single person, and in a pinch, it can also fit a companion.
